Dear Editor,
I am amazed at the number of sport officials who volunteer their services to sports development despite little or no rewards.
Of course there are exceptions as in the case of basketball, football and cricket whose officials are paid for officiating at events.
Of course there are other reasons why some volunteers continue to render free service, chief among them being the love of the sport, their past participation, or the involvement of loved ones in the discipline in question. In most cases, the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages.
Some sports associations, irrespective of their input, do not receive subventions. I speak of such disciplines as volleyball, swimming and athletics among others. Notwithstanding the absence of such tangible support, Guyanese still expect to see an accumulation of medals whenever local athletes participate at the highest level of International competition like the Central American and Caribbean Games, Pan American, the World Games and ultimately the Olympic Games.
Some volunteers display gross unconcern to their duties and claim that they are not paid for their services thus their attitudes.
I strongly believe that the relevant governmental authorities should become more involved in the affairs of these Associations.
They should be directed to register all volunteers under their purview, especially the technical officials.
After the registration process, these officials should be given some sort of stipend as a token of appreciation for their efforts.
I think the time has arrived when government officials ought to show some appreciation for the work being undertaken by many of the associations while realising that these associations are in dire need of assistance if they are to take their respective disciplines to the next level.
The die is cast! It would be interesting to observe what the response would be in addressing the real needs of the national sport associations in 2009.
Yours truly,
Sports Enthusiast
