The residents of Paramakatoi have reason to celebrate: reports reaching Kaieteur News have said that the Guyana Post Office (GPO) will be resuming service to Paramakatoi shortly.
For unexplained reasons, the delivery of mail to Paramakatoi had been stopped since last April, despite the numerous aircraft which travel into that area on a regular basis, delivering supplies to the mountaintop village.
Reports indicate that the mail will be flown into Paramakatoi and delivered to local shop keeper ‘Sammy’, who will then take the necessary steps to distribute the mail to the recipients.
Reports are that, the day after an article was published in the Sunday edition of the Kaieteur News which highlighted the difficulty of residents in Paramakatoi in accessing mail, officials of the Guyana Post Office contacted ‘Sammy,’ and the necessary arrangements were put in place.
The death of the postal service has had much more serious consequences for residents of the village, apart from the basic inconvenience of not getting mail. Reports state that an individual had applied to go to the University of Guyana (UG), and was accepted, but his acceptance letter never made it back to Paramakatoi, hence he missed his opportunity for higher learning at the institution.
The residents of Paramakatoi had recently expressed the need for the postal service to be restored to their village, noting that without it their communication was totally cut off, and they have no way of knowing what was happening in the outside world.
