Russell Cornelius, who lost his legs on Sunday in a horrific accident at sea, has been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Russell appeared to be in better spirits when Kaieteur News visited him in Ward ‘A’ yesterday.
However, the now-disabled man is concerned about his future and that of his family. Cornelius is the father of four, the youngest being one year old.
Cornelius, 43, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, had his legs severed at the knees when his limbs were caught in a winch on the World Friend 307, a trawler that is reportedly operated by Noble House Seafoods.
The mishap occurred at around 18:00 hrs last Sunday while the vessel was some nine miles out in the Atlantic Ocean.
Kaieteur News was told that Cornelius was hauling in a seine when his trousers got entangled in the winch.
Before anyone could go to his assistance, the winch had cut through both of his legs. Fortunately, the trawler captain managed to contact the lighthouse supervisor, who informed the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.
The crew of a Coast Guard vessel then brought the injured man to shore, and an ambulance took him to the GPHC. Cornelius has been a seaman for about 13 years.
However, he has reportedly been employed with Noble House Seafoods for only about four months.
