Despite ending at the top of their group, defending champions Hikers Hockey Club was eliminated at the semi-final stage at the Sixth Annual Ventures Invitational Tournament which concluded recently in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Guyanese were beaten by Canada’s Ontario United via penalty flicks after regulation time finished in a 5-5 stalemate. They also lost the third place playoff game against Petrotrin by a 4-2 margin.
Earlier, the locals defeated Fatima of T&T 5-2 in their final group stage match to lead the point standings in their section of the draw to end with a record of four wins and a draw.
In the other group, Notre Dame emerged on top after defeating Ontario United 1 of Canada.
In an evenly contested and entertaining semi-final between Ontario United 1 and Hikers, the latter got their goals from Robert France, who netted a double, while Jerazeno Bell, Alex Gouveia and Devin Munroe supported with one goal each.
In the final, Ontario United suffered a similar fate as the Guyanese when they lost on penalties to Notre Dame after full time ended 3-all.
Meanwhile, a release from the club stated that even though they were unable to duplicate last year’s result, the team performed at an exceptionally high standard and thrilled the fans with some top quality hockey.
The six man squad played as a cohesive unit throughout the tournament with very solid defence and an attacking offence.
Goalkeeper Azad De Abreu was outstanding as usual and pulled off some brilliant saves that often denied opposing forwards more scoring opportunities.
Other outstanding performances came from Jerazeno Bell, Devin Munroe, Robert Fernandes, Robert France and Alex Gouveia.
The squad comprised the following players Azad De Abreu (goalkeeper), Jerazeno Bell, Devin Munroe, Alex Gouveia, Robert Fernandes, Robert France, Shawn Boodlall, and Guest Player Ryan Cowie.
