Injured seaman Russell Cornelius said yesterday that God was with him during Sunday’s horrible mishap in which he lost both legs.
Cornelius, 43, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, had his legs severed when his limbs became entangled in a winch on the World Friend 307, a trawler that is reportedly operated by Nobel House Seafoods.
He is in a stable condition in the Georgetown Hospital Corporation’s (GPHC) Intensive Care Unit.
Speaking briefly to Kaieteur News, Cornelius said that he was hauling in a large seine when his trousers got entangled in the winch.
Before anyone could go to his assistance, the winch had cut through both of his legs.
Cornelius, who remained conscious throughout his ordeal, recalled staring down at his severed limbs.
At the time, the vessel was some nine miles out in the Atlantic Ocean.
Fortunately, the trawler captain managed to contact the lighthouse supervisor, who informed the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.
The crew of a Coast Guard vessel then brought the injured man to shore, and an ambulance took him to the GPHC in the nick of time.
“God was with me,” Cornelius said.
Cornelius, who fathered four children, including a one-year-old son, has been a seaman for about 13 years.
However, he has reportedly been employed with Noble Seafoods for only about four months.
