After a prolific year where he has chalked up his 84th consecutive title, local male race walker, Rudolph Mitchell was adjudged Race Walker of the year for 2008 while Donna Ramkissoon copped a similar award in the female category.
Jeremy Cornelius was adjudged runner up to Mitchell while Shonette McFarlane was the runner up in the female category.
The awards ceremony that took place at the Cavaliers Sports & Tour Club (CS&TC) Soesdyke, ECD, Wednesday last witnessed Madonna Benjamin copping the award in the junior category while Andy Harry occupies the runner up position. Debidyal Harold walked away with the top prize in the veteran category while Maurice Fagundes came in as the runner up. The younger Fagundes, Johnathan received the award for the most promising race walker.
Several personalities and organisations were also rewarded for the staunch corporate support rendered to the sport. They are, Public Service Minister, Dr Jennifer Westford, President of the GOA, K A Juman Yassin, General Manager, Guyana Beverage Company Ltd, Robert Selman, The Guyana Revenue Authority, Bish Panday, Managing director of P&P Insurance Brokers Ltd and Dr Jose DaSilva, Managing Director Modern optical service.
Kaieteur Sports and NCN Radio and Television also received commendations for highlighting the activities of the CS&TC over the year, while freelance photographer Michael Goring also came in for mention. A special awards ceremony will be held soon. (Michael Benjamin)
