A licensed firearm holder operating as a taxi driver was relieved of his weapon and his car by two armed men on Friday night.
The incident comes in light of comments by some sections of society suggesting that taxi drivers should be allowed to carry firearms to stem the increased attacks on them.
Police, in a press release, stated that they are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at about 20:00 hours on Friday at Section ‘K’, Campbellville, during which taxi service operator Mohamed Khan was attacked and robbed by two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm.
According to the police, their investigations have revealed that Khan was hired by the two men to go to Section ‘K’.
While in the area, he was held at gunpoint and relieved of his licensed pistol and ammunition, personal jewellery and his burgundy AT 192 Toyota Carina motor car, HB 6440, after which the men escaped.
Meanwhile, at about 23:15 hours the same night, police ranks in the Stabroek Market area stopped and searched a man who was acting suspiciously.
An unlicensed Walther pistol was found in his possession.
The man has been arrested and is in police custody.
Charges will be laid shortly.
