The ‘Grow More’ food campaign is having a negative impact on Guyana Water Incorporated as consumers are using the commodity to water their plants.
Chief Executive Officer of GWI, Karan Singh, told the media that while the water company believes in the thrust of the campaign, it must not be to the burden of GWI.
Singh said that water is being wasted by people, who are not metered, or those who are using water for purposes other than those which the service is being provided.
He added that in many instances there are persons who are not metered that are using the water to irrigate their plants but only pay as domestic customers.
“We are losing revenue, because we are not capturing the full volume of water that the particular customer is using…We are not in the business of producing water for agriculture, we are in the business of producing water for domestic purposes.”
He is urging those who are using GWI water for agricultural purposes to be metered.
“At the moment what we have is 60 percent of water is non-revenue. Every dollar of water we produce, 60 cents is unaccounted for through wastage, breakages and stealing,” the GWI CEO stated.
But even as Singh accuses the ‘Grow More’ campaign of being a burden to the water company, Farmers’ Relations Specialist within the Ministry of Agriculture, Parmanand Persaud, yesterday lashed out at GWI, stating that he hopes that farmers are not used as ‘scapegoats’ for the shortcomings of the company.
In an interview with Kaieteur News, Persaud said that farmers will require some form of irrigation to water their plants and the Ministry of Agriculture will not in anyway blame farmers for utilizing available means of water at their disposal.
