– suicide suspected
Police on the East Coast of Demerara are investigating the circumstances that led to the gruesome discovery of the decomposing body of a Cuban national in his apartment at Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge.
The body of Edwardo Barreios, 38, an electrical engineer who was lecturing in Business Management at the University of Guyana, was discovered yesterday, lying face down on his bed, by an occupant of the upper flat of the two-storey building he lived in.
Police have almost ruled out foul play, since there are reports that Barreios, who had been in Guyana for the past 10 years, had appeared to be in ill health recently.
“He sounded quite depressed over the last couple of days,” a friend said.
“He even contemplated suicide,” the friend said.
The friend even said that she had invited him to her house for Old Year’s, but he had informed her that he didn’t want to make her cry with his problems.
“He complained of feeling unwell, and said that some days he didn’t even have the strength to get out of bed and drink sugar water, which he had been surviving on for the pat couple of days,” the friend told this newspaper.
A neighbour told this newspaper that she last saw Barreios, who also taught Spanish at the Cummings Lodge Government School, on Christmas Eve, when he came to her shop to purchase some telephone cards.
She said that the man appeared to be ill, and he subsequently left and went home.
The woman said that she began getting a foul smell, but initially thought that it was coming from a dead animal in the area.
However, as the stench got stronger, the occupant of the upper flat decided to investigate, after not seeing the Cuban national for several days. Upon checking, the body was discovered.
As news of the discovery spread, several of Barreios’s countrymen flocked to the scene to confirm the information that they had received.
Police say that a post mortem examination will be performed to ascertain the cause of Barreios’s death.
The Cuban Embassy was informed, and a determination is to be made as to where the body will be interred.
