Dear Editor,
Without doubt, Guyanese were fooled into believing that the cost of living was going to drop at the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT).
This is yet to be seen. Initially, the debates included “broadening the tax base”. I am sure that all Guyanese understood this to be ‘everybody should be paying taxes and not only those that were paying PAYE’.
Today, I am confused. I am still paying PAYE, like the other thousands of people, while I am required to pay VAT also, which brings to total 49.33%, albeit, with a small exemption on my monthly salary.
Maybe someone can help us to understand!!
