National cyclist Judah Klass, 20, of 30 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, who claimed that he was advised to use marijuana as a medicine, will have to spend the next six months in jail if he fails to pay a fine of $6,000.
In addition, Klass will have to do two months of community service in the precincts of the Central Police Station.
The penalty was imposed by Magistrate Krisendat Persaud when the accused appeared before him at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Monday to answer to the charge of being in possession of cannabis.
The court was told that on Christmas Day, Klass was observed to be behaving in a disorderly manner in New Amsterdam by ranks of a police mobile patrol.
He was arrested and a search was carried out on his person, revealing leaves, seeds and stems of the plant in his right side pants pocket.
The narcotic weighed one gram and Klass was subsequently charged for the offence.
Attorney at law Charrandass Persaud, who represented the accused, told the court that Klass is a member of the Flying Aces Cycling club and had represented the country on more than one occasion.
The attorney begged the court to have mercy on his client, who he said lives with his grandmother.
Persaud explained that his client was very remorseful and was a first offender. He said that Klass was wrongly advised to use the drugs as a medication for a medical condition.
