Dear Editor,
I totally agree with Mark Da Costa (letter on Sunday, 28th) in his conclusion that no successful social theory can be constructed, but I would like to propose what I believe is the real reason for this dilemma which has divided our modern world to such an extent that we have been threatened over and over with total annihilation.
Any social structure that is not based on the rights of the individual as well as guided by the collective conscience of these individuals is bound to fail. This to my mind is the reason for the eternal conflict between the two dominant systems, as each one moves towards extremism in its bid to prove its supremacy over the other by promoting one of these elements over the other.
Communism cannot be successful because of its materialistic basis and emphasis on collectivism over individuality, and capitalism is losing its battle to create a just society because individuals who are allowed to act freely and at the same time not encouraged to be informed by social consciousness will eventually strive for their own good to the detriment of the rest of society.
I would further suggest that this social consciousness, and in fact this entire process of evolution towards a just social structure, can only be achieved through the grace of the Almighty, who prompts us to keep seeking for perfection (and Himself) by following His commandments.
