DEAR EDITOR,
I am a resident of Enmore. Because of a culvert on the main access road to Hope West, Enmore, currently under construction, over 1,000 residents are inconvenienced.
The contractor has abandoned the project for over a month now. During the past weeks, over five vehicles got stuck on the culvert, which is impassable even on foot. The Enmore/Hope NDC and/or the Region Four Administration seem unable to get the contractor to complete the job.
Mr. Editor, my investigation on this contractor reveals that this same contractor has nine unfinished contracts in Region Four between St. Cuthbert’s Mission and Cane Grove, and I am hard put to understand how he is given contracts spanning so wide a geographic area.
This contractor’s failure was predictable and is aided and abetted by those who awarded the contracts. I understand that he bids the lowest.
Whose hand is in whose pocket?
I list hereunder the unfinished contracts:
1. Rehab. of Linden Drive, Melanie $6,251,330:- behind schedule
2. Rehab. of St. Cuthbert’s Nursery $6,186,020:- “
3. Rehab. of living quarters- St. Cuthbert’s $6,794,355:- “
4. Rehab. Rail Street, Enterprise $5,272,915:- “
5. Const. of revetment – New Hope $4,624,100:- “
6. Rehab. of Victoria St. – Plaisance $ ? “
7. Const. of revetment – Cane Grove $ ? “
8. Const. of Joyce & Rutherfort St., ECD $1,901,175:- “
9. Const. of Culvert, Enmore, Hope West $790,000:- “
As a taxpayer, I call on the subject minister, Tender Board officials and the Auditor General’s Office to initiate an immediate investigation into the foregoing. Little wonder charges of corruption are levelled against public officials. Incidents like this do little to alter that perception.
