Mahaica smash-up…
Seven survivors of the Mahaica smash-up, which occurred on Saturday, were discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday.
The persons include Samantha Marks, 22, who was discharged but opted to remain in hospital because her two-year-old daughter, Sheneza Bacchus, who suffered a broken leg, is still a patient at the institution.
Shelenza Rasheed, 35, was also discharged, along with Neffeesa Raham and Isha Khan. The latter two suffered minor neck injures.
Pooran Singh and Anil Maraj were treated and sent away.
However, Arfeen Khan, 47, remains hospitalized and his condition is listed as critical. When Kaieteur News visited him in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, he was unconscious.
He suffered head and neck injures.
This father is still unaware that his two children died as a result of the accident.
Relatives fear that, if told, he would go into a relapse.
His son, Abar Khan, is also still hospitalized. He received lacerations to the head, along with two fractured arms.
Doreen Seenarine also remains hospitalized. She suffered a broken leg as well as neck injures. According to the woman, she had left her home in Helena, Mahaica to visit a friend’s wife in Unity, and “just felt a hard impact” and awoke in the hospital.
The accident, which occurred on Saturday at Hand-en-Veldt, Mahaica, claimed the lives of three persons, including two brothers — Zakariyah and Ubaibulla Khan, five and three years old respectively . The driver of the other minibus, Hafeez Bacchus, who sustained massive head injures, also died in the smash-up.
According to a police report, minibus BGG 4345, which was being driven by Hafeez Bacchus, was proceeding along the roadway when it crashed into the “parked minibus” which was being driven by Arfeen Khan. The crash caused Khan’s minibus to end up in a nearby trench.
Eyewitnesses who saw the extent of the damage to both buses speculated that Bacchus was speeding at the time of the accident. After the accident, the occupants of the bus were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Hafeez Bacchus, Zakariyah Khan, and three- year-old Ubaibulla Khan were pronounced dead on arrival.
