A fire, believed to be of electrical origin, broke out early yesterday morning at the building which houses the Commonwealth Youth Programme and the Help and Shelter welfare agencies on Homestretch Avenue.
Kaieteur News understands that the fire started at the bottom flat of the building, which houses the office of the Help and Shelter. It is believed that an “electrical fan” was left on during the holiday season, and with the fluctuating current it may have overheated and started the fire.
Quick response by the Guyana Fire Service saved the building from being completely engulfed by flames.
The office of the Help and Shelter’s Director was scorched, along with the accounts department. The building also suffered water damage to a number of computers and other electrical appliances in the office. Kaieteur News understands that employees of both offices were informed about the fire via the security service which secures the building.
The Commonwealth Youth Programme’s boardroom was scorched, since it was directly below where the fire started.
That entity, too, suffered water damages.
Investigations are continuing.
