– stepfather critical
At around 18:35hrs yesterday, a driver, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, claimed the life of eight-year-old Alicia Forrester, of 36 Hyde Park, Parika, and left her step-father, Alvin Constantine, 36, in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The accident happened at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop.
Details of the accident are still sketchy, but Kaieteur News was reliably informed that the motor car, PLL 2554, which was driven by Zulifikar Goolzar Nandar, 22, was speeding when it collided with the victims.
The two victims were taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where Forrester was pronounced dead on arrival and her step- father’s condition was listed as critical.
At the time of the accident, the victims were attempting to cross the road when the car, which was travelling in the opposite direction, collided with them.
Eyewitnesses said that the man’s wife had already crossed with the couple’s two other children, and was waiting for her daughter and husband to cross the road.
After hitting the two victims, Nandar drove about 500 yards from the scene. He was later caught by public-spirited persons and taken to the Vreed -en-Hoop Police Station.
Police sources confirmed that the driver would be charged for causing death by dangerous driving, along with driving under the influence of alcohol.
A police release stated that the driver of the vehicle was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
This is the seventh road fatality within four days. An accident on Saturday at Mahaica left two children and the driver of a minibus dead. The victims were Hafez Bacchus, 35, Zakareika Khan, five, and his brother, Ubulilla Khan, three. Eleven other persons were injured in that accident.
On Christmas Day, popular drinks vendor Selwyn Bailey, 51, was killed instantly when a minibus ran off the road and ploughed into his drinks stand. Bailey ended up in the nearby canal.
And 68-year-old Watson Joseph was struck by a motorcar on the Number Five Village Main Road at about 18:35hrs. University of Guyana student Kellon Griffith was also killed on Boxing Day when the vehicle in which he was travelling turned turtle on the Rupert Craig Highway in the vicinity of Celina’s Resort.
Two other persons — Kurt Persuad and Gerald Harry — were injured in the accident. A police report had stated that the driver of the vehicle was speeding and lost control of the vehicle. The car was driven by 20-year-old Persaud, of 119 John Smith Campbellville.
To date, 113 persons have lost their lives due to traffic accidents this year, compared to 206 for the pervious year. Six children have lost their lives for this year, compared to 30 for 2007.
