The homecoming of a 25-year-old Wai-Wai man from Lethem ended tragically after he succumbed to injuries he sustained by jumping from a moving truck on Tuesday night.
Jesse Susie died at a hospital in Bon Fin, Brazil, where he was transferred after receiving initial treatment at the Lethem Hospital.
Susie, who recently graduated with honours from the Government Technical Institute in Georgetown, was heading home to spend Christmas with his relatives when the mishap occurred.
According to reports, as the truck Susie was travelling in slowed down near Barrack Retreat, a few miles from Lethem, excitement got the better of the young man and, instead of waiting for the truck to stop, Susie jumped off and sustained injuries to his head.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Lethem Hospital, but so severe were his injuries that a desperate attempt was made to get him to a better medical facility in Boa Vista, Brazil.
Susie only made it to Bon Fim, where he died.
