Following Thursday’s fire at 32 Ketley Street, Charlestown, which left 40-year-old Ronald Misir dead, relatives of the dead man have explained that his three young children, who were in the house with him when it caught fire, are staying with Misir’s wife, ‘Nita,’ and her family in Albouystown.
According to Nicky Misir, the dead man’s younger brother, they were alerted to the fire by Nita’s family, and they came to the scene of the fire. The children apparently left with Nita and her family, and sometime yesterday, Nita’s brother reportedly called Nicky and told him that he should not worry, as the children were alright and were staying with them (Nita and her family).
One report hints that the fire may have been started by a lit cigarette which Ronald Misir was smoking, but other reports have said that the fire was started when a kerosene stove fell to the floor of the wooden building.
The fire started at approximately 15:30 hours, and by the time the Guyana Fire Service had extinguished the blaze, only a shell of the building remained.
Persons living in the area explained that the fire was the second to have broken out in the building.
Ronald Misir was reportedly intoxicated when the fire broke out, and the dead man’s sister, Chandra Persaud, said that whenever Nita would leave the house, he (Ronald) would drink heavily.
