Guyana’s bowlers once again turned in a good performance as the team ended the inaugural Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) 50-overs regional under-17 cricket series with a comfortable seven-wicket victory against the Leeward Islands at the famous Queens Park Oval yesterday.
Off-spinners Joemal La Fleur (3-18 from 10 overs) and Ricardo Devers (2-2 from 4 overs) along with leg-spinner Amir Khan (2-24 from 10 overs) and pacer Seon Daniels (2-13 from 5 overs) combined to rout the Leewards for 82 in 37.3 overs before Guyana responded with 83-3 off 14.1 overs with Quincy Ovid-Richardson (26) and Herell Greene (23) setting up the win with a 57-run opening partnership in 5.3 overs.
On a gloomy day in Port-of-Spain, Guyana won the toss and invited the Leeward Islands to bat on a flat track and lush green outfield in an encounter reduced to 47 overs per side due to overnight rain.
Daniels, Guyana’s most impressive player in this competition, struck in the 6th over when he knocked out the off stump of Nino Henry (3) to leave the Leewards, the only team to lose every game so far, on 10-1.
Daniels, who bowled six wides in his first five-over spell but conceded just 13 runs, soon sent the middle stump of Patrick Walters (5) cart-wheeling as the Islanders slipped to 24-2 in the 10th over in overcast conditions.
Left-arm pacer Andre Stoll (5-2-9-0) was again on-target in his opening spell as the Leewards, with just two triple figure totals in their previous four matches, struggled to get the ball away.
It was soon 28-3 in the 13th over when Shernyl Burns (6) was stumped off LaFleur who also removed Skipper Adelvin Phillip (6) in similar fashion at 43-4 in the 17th over.
La Fleur, a tidy off-spinner from Tucber Park, struck again when he trapped Daren Benta (9) leg before at 45-5 in the 19th over. Khan then had Zvereo Forbes (6) caught in the deep at 61-6 in the 26th over as the disappointing batting display from the Leewards (who fell for 64 against T&T and 73 against Barbados) continued.
Tevin Osbourne (11) and Larry Oudain (12) offered some resistance before Osbourne was bowled by Devers and Oudain was taken at point off Khan in successive overs as the Leewards lost two wickets with their score on 76.
Shakiem Saunders was then bowled for a duck by Devers at 81-9 and Corey Morton (0) was run out as the Leewards failed to reach 100 for their third time in the competition.
For the first time in the competition the Guyanese looked to dominate from the inception with Ovid-Richardson and Greene taking the attack to the bowlers with positive stroke-play as Guyana raced to 50 in 5.1 overs.
However, Guyana lost three wickets before lunch to reach 62-3 off 9.2 overs at the interval as the young batsmen again showed a lack of mental strength.
Ovid-Richardson, who stroked four fours in his entertaining 24-ball 26, was well taken at cover off medium pacer Forbes at 57-1, while Dayanand Roopnarine (0) fell in the next over to Osbourne as Guyana lost two wickets for a run.
Greene, who made a concerted effort to play shots, seemed unfortunate to be given leg before; sweeping at off-spinner Oudain on the stroke of lunch at 62-3. His 23 came from 27 balls and included two fours.
After the break, Jamally Odle (12*) and Man-of-the-Match La Fleur (6*) ensured Guyana won with 32.2 overs remaining in the one-sided contest.
Guyana played an unchanged eleven from their washed out game against Jamaica; leaving out Delon Fernandes and Triston Carmichael. Keon Joseph was the other player on the Guyana bench after being advised to rest his groin injury which also troubled him last July during the regional under-19 series in Barbados.
The Guyana team, who had two wins, two loses and a no-result is scheduled to arrive home this morning.
Coach Orin Bailey praised the work of his bowlers but added that even in yesterday’s win, his batsmen failed to stamp their authority chasing a small total.
“In every match our bowlers played their part as no team reached 200 against us. Every bowler we used in this competition bowled well and if our batsmen had shown the type of form they showed in Guyana, we would have won this competition easily.
I hope the young guys here would have learnt something from this trip and will work hard on improving their game when they get back home as they hope to make the national under-19 side next year,” Bailey said.
