The littering culture of citizens must cease if the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown is to effectively maintain the drainage system of the city.
This is according to Public Relations Officer Royston King, who in a release issued yesterday said that the council is calling on all citizens to assist it in protecting and preserving the environment.
He pointed out that citizens should do everything practicable to keep the city clean and tidy.
“Unless citizens see the health of the environment as a personal responsibility the council would be hard pressed to push ahead with other developmental works,” King stated in the release.
However on Monday Deputy City Mayor acting in the capacity of Mayor met with professional engineers operating within the city to discuss the drainage system in Georgetown.
Among the concerns raised was the excessive use of plastic and Styrofoam.
According to the release these non-biodegradable materials when dumped into the drains are responsible in many instances for damage caused to pumps, thus affecting the drainage of the city.
The need to establish retention or holding areas came up as a very crucial point when the subject of redesigning and modernising of the city’s drainage network came up for discussion.
And according to the release it was put forward that it may become necessary to provide such areas to hold storm water during high tides.
Also the use of modern technologies to assist in effective drainage will be explored by the council, the release added.
But in order to achieve any goal set out by the municipality it was established that exploring the relevance of culture in the way citizens treat and care for the environment was inevitable.
The release noted that “it is important that council exploit the positives of our different cultures to persuade citizens to do the right thing and protect the environment”.
For this the municipality will be convening a special forum next month to discuss the situation with stakeholders to allow new ideas and innovation to be highlighted with a view to attracting citizens’ assistance towards the upkeep of the city.
