The Auditor General report on the Fidelity Investments probe should be sent to Parliament rather than to the President, Alliance for Change Chairman Khemraj Ramjattan said yesterday.
In an interview with Kaieteur News, Ramjattan said that the AG should not be taking instructions from the President as to whom his office should investigate, as this will dilute the independence of the office.
The Auditor General, Deodat Sharma, had said that the report was completed last Friday and will be presented to President Bharrat Jagdeo when he returns from overseas. President Jagdeo is expected back tomorrow.
The police have already submitted an initial report based on their investigations.
The Director of Public Prosecutions is expected to base her advice on the recommendations of the commission, which included investigators from the police’s Criminal Investigations Department and the Office of the Auditor General.
The probe was initiated by President Bharrat Jagdeo last April, after allegations of corruption regarding the importation of millions of dollars in Polar beer surfaced.
Initially five Customs officers were implicated in the scandal and were immediately sent home.
Kaieteur News understands that the report has recommended criminal charges for 13 other officers.
It however cleared five senior officials of the Customs and Trade Administration.
Several of the Customs officers implicated are currently on leave to facilitate the investigations.
