An irate former contractor who was attached to the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is claiming that GWI owes him some $385,000 for works he did for the water company early this year.
David Sinclair, of 933 Kaneville/Grove, East Bank Demerara, told Kaieteur News that he has been employed at GWI for 15 years, but in June of this year his contract was terminated by the company without any official reason.
He explained that, in May, he got into a court matter and was remanded to prison for one month and two weeks. After he came out of prison, the then manager of the Peter’s Hall Division of GWI informed him that his contract had been terminated.
According to Sinclair, he was upset about the situation and he then vented his frustration with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GWI, Karan Singh, who then intervened in the situation and he got his contract back.
However, according to the man, one week after that, the manager again informed him that his contract was once again terminated, and promised that his termination letter will be sent to him. To date, the man said, he has not received the letter, and GWI has since refused to pay him his money.
He noted that the money is for field works he did in areas such as Eccles and Diamond, East Bank Demerara. He said that the work involved repairs and service connections.
The man told this newspaper that he has eight children to maintain and he is in dire need of the money, since it is the Christmas holidays.
An official from GWI told this newspaper that Sinclair was indeed sent a termination letter, which stated that his contract was terminated for improprieties, because the contractor operated outside of the boundaries stipulated in the contract.
The official could not have given any other comment on the matter, since he did not have all the facts of the matter.
