As investigations continue into the mob beating that led to the death of electrician Hardel Haynes, police have now detained five persons.
A senior police source confirmed that the five detained persons are being treated as suspects.
Haynes was reportedly beaten by several persons at Pirai Square, East La Penitence at about 02:15 hours on Tuesday.
He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he died while receiving medical attention.
This newspaper understands that Haynes was riding a bicycle on his way home when he was attacked by a group of men, who began to physically assault him, apparently mistaking him for a thief. A post mortem examination revealed that multiple injuries were the cause of his death.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday, Cheryl Sydney, the dead man’s wife, said that while she is happy that the police were able to detain five persons, she will not be satisfied until charges are instituted.
“All I was made to understand is that they have people in custody. When (the five) get charged I will be satisfied,” Sydney said.
She said that she has been receiving telephone calls from persons in the area where her husband was beaten to death.
However, although the persons claimed to have information about the incident, they are reluctant to come forward and give it to the police.
Sydney said that she has received information about a female lashing her husband’s head with a piece of wood.
For ten-year-old Adele Haynes, who is preparing to write the Grade Six Examination in June next year, the event could not have come at a worst time. However, the adolescent, who usually went with her father on his many vocations, remains positive.
“His death will not affect me really, because my father had good education and it’s passing on to me. In class, I’m doing very well. If I don’t worry about what happened to my father and at least study my work, I would be successful,” the North Georgetown Primary School student told Kaieteur News.
“He has three schools that he would like me to go to: Queen’s, Bishop’s and Saints, and I’m confident that I will be successful,” Adele Haynes added. For obvious reasons, the family is not celebrating Christmas this year.
“I’m not celebrating Christmas. When 40 days reach, I’ll fix the house and then keep a service. I don’t have the spirit to celebrate. In my entire life I never, ever had a Christmas like this,” said Cheryl Sydney.
