National scrabble champion Fred Collins rose from his recent dismal form to cart off the Scrabble Blitz trophy when that tournament was staged at the Maltenoes Sports Club Thomaslands, Sunday last. He amassed 5 points and a positive spread of 425.
James Krakowsky fought valiantly but despite winning as many games as Collins had to be content with second place by dint of a lower spread of 180.
Floyd Carmichael completed the podium positions with 4 games and a spread of 263. Of note also, was Colin Chichester’s performance. He also won 4 games but fell short of Carmichael’s spread by a mere 8.
This format of the tournament differed from the others with each player allocated 15, instead of the regular 30 minutes to complete the game.
Should the player utilize more time than that allocated, he automatically loses the game as against other tournaments where defaulting players are penalized by subtracting 10 points from their total. Two players, Chichester and Maurice Munroe were victims of this rule.
Krakowsky proved he is no slouch and his consistency is beginning to worry the more seasoned players. His only loss was at the hands of Abigail McDonald in the third round by a spread of 146. That he could rebound and put up a challenge to Collins speaks volumes of his tenacity.
Collins, on the other hand, suffered a minor setback when he lost to Chichester by a spread of 54. Carmichael surrendered a game each to Krawkowsky and Collins in the2nd and 6th round, respectively but still managed to earn a podium spot.
It seems though, that Carmichael is beginning to feel comfortable in this position as this is the third time in a row that he has clinched this spot after showing much promise of winning the tournament.
Even though Collins emerged as the eventual winner, it is obvious that there has been all round improvement. At the start of the final round three players, Collins, Krakowsky and Carmichael were all on 4 points and at that point it was anybody’s game.
Meanwhile, the players will be back in action this Sunday for the ‘Scrabble Scramble.’ Players are asked to note that the venue has been shifted to the Chamber of Commerce Building in Waterloo Street, opposite Swansea.
This is the final tournament for the year and will be sponsored by the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP).
Each player will be charged the normal entrance fee of five hundred dollars. GASP will then put up a similar amount which will be presented to the winner. Word formation time is 10:00hrs sharp.
