After days of enduring a pungent odour, some Campbellville residents yesterday confirmed the death of 70-year-old Sydney Green, whose badly decomposed body was discovered in an apartment at Lot 71 Seaforth Street.
The body was discovered at about 17:30 hours by police who responded to a report that a person may be lying dead in the house.
So badly decomposed was the body that police are so far unable to determine if Green was a victim of foul play, although that possibility appears far fetched.
Police believe that Green, a stove serviceman who was previously attached to the Guyana Stores Limited, died some time late last week.
Residents claimed that they were getting a foul smell but assumed that it might have been a dead rat or some other animal.
Undertakers remove the decomposing body of Sydney Green (inset) from his apartment.
However, after not seeing Green for a while, they began suspecting that he was the reason for the strong scent.
Their fears were confirmed when police entered the house and found Green’s decomposing body.
According to residents, Green lived alone, since most of his relatives are overseas. Investigators will rely on a post mortem examination to determine what course their investigations will take.
