The morning traffic on Carifesta Avenue yesterday was brought to a halt, as a motor car (PGG 5268) spun around and almost ended up in one of the canals along that thoroughfare, as it narrowly avoided hitting a Route 44 minibus (BLL 4207), which ended up in the drain on the opposite side of the street.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, the motor car, which was being driven by a woman, was travelling westward, towards Georgetown, at a rapid rate, when it swerved suddenly to avoid a bicycle. The car, in its efforts to avoid the bicycle, is said to have cut into the oncoming lane.
The minibus, which was driven by Alvin Frank of Supply, East Coast Demerara, was travelling in the opposite direction, and the driver when presented with the oncoming car, also swerved and grazed a lamp post, in front of the Guyana Legion building, before running into the drain. The minibus toppled onto its side as it entered the drain.
To avoid a head-on collision with the minibus, the driver of the car locked the wheel in the opposite direction and this resulted in the car spinning around and running off the road, almost entering the drain in front of Marian Academy.
Eyewitnesses opined that the minibus may have also been travelling above the prescribed speed limit. Added to this, reports are that there were children in the minibus.
Despite the efforts of both drivers to avoid the vehicles colliding, the car and the minibus grazed each other just before going off of the road.
The driver of the car is said to have sustained significant injuries to her leg, while the driver and passengers of the minibus were reportedly not injured, apart from minor cuts and scrapes.
Both vehicles were considerably damaged.
Police ranks that were on the scene explained that the wet road, coupled with the excessive speed by both drivers, was the primary cause of the accident.
