Conservation International (CI), in its continued pledge to Lethem and Region Nine, on Friday last presented the Lethem Library and Research Centre with a computer system, a printer and a large screen valued at some $5 million.
The Research Centre, which was commissioned one year ago, benefited from the donation after CI had made a similar contribution to the public library in Georgetown. Since much of CI’s work is done in the hinterland regions of Guyana, the donation was made to the Research Centre.
Persons from St Ignatius, Culvert City and Tabatinga are expected to benefit from the contribution from CI. Many students utilize the services of the library and do research there for their school assignments and projects.
It is hoped that the equipment will be used for the benefit of the community at large.
According to sources, the contribution was supposed to have been made earlier, but this was not possible, as the Research Centre was plagued by power problems, which have only recently been resolved.
CI has reportedly been involved in numerous activities in Region Nine, and has spearheaded the environmental conservation efforts in Lethem.
