The much anticipated day to mark the birth of Jesus Christ is just about 18 days away and Christmas shoppers are hastening to cash in on the many bargains around the city.
The capital city was a hive of activities, evident by the hustle and bustle of shoppers, a feature that is repeated annually during this time of year.
Christmas items were being showcased by stores and roadside vendors alike who braved the weather and flooded pavements, yesterday, to get in on the activities.
But are there any new items for shoppers to look forward to this year? According to one city proprietor, while new styles and fashion are anticipated each year, shoppers generally expect to find the same items listed on their previous Christmas lists.
Among the foremost “must have” items, the proprietor noted, is definitely the curtains which are improved on with each passing year.
It was noted though that curtains as usual this year are available in a variety of colours, styles and are priced to suit just about any pocket.
And while decorations inclusive of the Christmas tree are available in their numbers, the most exciting of all shopping activities observed yesterday was that of gift shopping.
Yesterday, the children were taking over the show. At Sachi’s on Regent Street, several children could be seen seeking out their gift of preference, no longer relying on Santa Claus to choose that special gift.
According to one anxious little girl who was desperately trying to find a gift to fulfil her heart’s desire, she still expects that Santa Claus would visit her home on Christmas Eve to bring another gift since her mother was paying for her gift yesterday.
The eight-year-old with a broad smile on her face said that she wishes that Santa Claus would bring her a Cinderella dress for Old Year’s Night…And what does she need it for? “To go to church and break the New Year…duh!” said the embolden lass.
However, it was the typical toys that were the request of most children who were seen yesterday attempting to persuade their parents to buy the gifts they desired.
Gifts found around the city, especially for children, range from the ordinary doll to the very fashionable Barbie; soldiers dressed for combat to the aptly outfitted super hero, and the list goes on.
But according to a roadside vendor, yesterday’s activities were just the tip of the iceberg since it is expected that within another week’s time shopping would intensify.
