A Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara man was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation at around 19:30 hrs last night with a bullet in his spine.
Philbert Kaladeen, 40, was shot in the right shoulder by an unknown intruder in his Lot 4 Water Street home while he was in the bottom flat of the family’s two-storey residence. A male relative of Kaladeen’s has reportedly told police that he saw a man and a woman leaving the yard with a gold chain shortly after the shooting.
However, a sister who spoke with Kaieteur News gave no indication that robbery was the motive.
The male relative, who lives next door, reportedly told police that Kaladeen, who is self-employed, was preparing to have a bath when someone shot him.
The relative reportedly said that he rushed over to the premises and saw a man and a woman calmly walking out of the yard.
One of the intruders was reportedly holding a gold chain that belonged to the wounded man. A sister of the victim said that she was in the upper flat when she heard Kaladeen shouting: “I ain’t got!” “I ain’t got!”
The woman said that she assumed that Kaladeen’s 15-year-old son was asking him for money.
Shortly after, she heard an explosion but assumed that someone had lit a firecracker. It was only when she heard Kaladeen calling her that she suspected that the sound was actually a gunshot.
“I said: ‘Mammy, Philbert get shoot and like he dead.’ “
She eventually went to Kaladeen’s flat, where she saw her brother lying on the floor.
The injured man was rushed to a private hospital before being transferred to the GPHC, where his condition is listed as critical.
