The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has instructed that the murder charges against three youths in the death of ex-convict Rickford Barker be reduced to manslaughter.
This was announced on Thursday by the police prosecutor when the three accused made their second appearance in the Providence Magistrates Court.
The prosecutor informed Magistrate Priya Beharry that the DPP had reviewed the files on the case and had made her recommendation.
Kaieteur News understands that the attorneys for the three youths had asked the DPP to review the evidence. They had reportedly argued that the evidence could not support a case of murder.
The accused are to return to court on Tuesday.
An attorney for one of the men told Kaieteur News that an application for bail will be made once the murder charge is withdrawn.
Louie Dublin, Rupert Douglas, Ryan Chung, Samuel Junior Bobb and Walter Settle, who are all from Soesdyke, were charged on November 20 with murdering Rickford Barker on November 15.
The ex-convict’s semi-nude and battered body was found in a cemetery near the Soesdyke main road.
However, only Dublin, Douglas and Chung appeared in court, and arrest warrants have been issued for the other two accused.
There are reports that Barker, who was recently released from prison, was beaten shortly after he had broken into a shop in the area.
