Guyana’s position on avoided deforestation will be launched today when President Bharrat Jagdeo presents a technical report to stakeholders at the Convention Centre.
According to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, Guyana has very high forest coverage and a standing forest subjected to historically low rates of deforestation. Standing forests in this era of climate change and global warming, he noted, is no longer questioned.
As a consequence, Guyana expects that its contributions in maintaining its standing forest and to world’s environmental conservation would be treated fairly in the marketing of environmental services in combating carbon dioxide emissions.
He said that Guyana’s position will be presented in Poznan, Poland, where the President along with a delegation from Guyana will be participating in the Climate Change Conference.
Yesterday, the United Nations climate change organisation said the world’s poor countries will need $130 billion a year by 2030 to help them adapt to global warming and curb their carbon emissions.
The UN said that rich countries need to increase their payments over the next 20 years to six times the funds available now, which is about US$21B.
Meanwhile, the European Union also yesterday said that the 27-member bloc within the body will concentrate on the adaptation work in vulnerable countries to assist them to adapt to climate change.
The adaptation fund, which is designed under the Kyoto Protocol, will provide the developing countries with money to adapt to the impact of the climate change. The European Union is scheduled to approve a package pact on emissions and energy this month.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
