Residents of Section ‘B’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, are holding their breath and eagerly await workers from the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) to replace a broken pole, which has been threatening their safety for more than a week. The pole is broken at the bottom and is being supported by the three power lines that are fitted to it.
Now that the rains and possible high winds are imminent, residents fear that it would not be too long before the pole comes crashing down and causes severe damage to property and possibly a loss of life.
One resident, whose house is directly threatened, told this newspaper that she had reported the situation to the GPL and workers were sent to investigate.
However, according to the resident, the workers went away without ‘lifting a finger’. “They say that the pole got long more before it could fall down,” the resident stated.
When this newspaper visited the scene, the assessment of the GPL workers was far from the truth as the pole appears to be on the brink of crashing down.
