The post mortem results for Brandis Roberts, 67, who was found dead in his Parika home last Sunday morning, revealed that his death was due to asphyxia caused by strangulation.
According to a police statement, since the discovery of the body, two persons, a man and a woman, have been taken into police custody and are assisting the police in their investigations.
The woman was identified by residents of the area as Roberts’s paramour, while the man was only described as ‘a negro man from the area’.
It is suspected that Roberts was dead since the evening of November 29, as he was still wearing his work clothes and work boots when his body was discovered in the bottom flat of his residence, where he lived alone.
His hands were bound behind his back with a length of cord, apparently taken from an exercise machine in the house, and a shirt was tied around his throat.
The motive of the killing is yet unclear, as it is unclear whether any valuables were stolen; the victim was still wearing two gold rings when the body was found; the businessman’s cellular phone was untouched, as were the keys to his gas station and his car, which was parked outside of the house.
A canister containing documents was also found intact, although attempts had reportedly been made to force it open.
A friend of the deceased explained that Brandis was in the habit of making night deposits at the bank, and would most likely not have had any large sums of cash on him.
Burglars had reportedly broken into his home last year and carted off some $2.5M.
Kaieteur News understands that Brandis, who is a widower, has been living alone for the past seven years.
The gruesome discovery was made by the victim’s younger brother, Winsley Roberts, after Brandis failed to turn up at the gas station which he owned.
Police are continuing their investigations.
