Cougars FC and New Amsterdam United (NAU) will clash in the final of the Fruta Skills Football competition sponsored by the Guyana Beverage Inc. and organised by the Berbice Football Association on Saturday December 13.
Cougars booked their place following their 4-3 win over Brazilla while NA United took care of Rosignol United 6-3 in the feature semi-final match.
Playing at the Rosignol ground, the young NAU side outscored the host team 167 points to 109. The visitors took the lead in the 5th minute with a Delroy Dean goal but the home team hit back four minutes later when Delroy Fraser out sprinted the NAU. But Dean completed a double and put NAU back in the lead in the 37th minute. Colin Bowry made it 3 – 1 on the stroke of half time.
After the break, NAU scored their fourth goal through Devon James in the 66th minute, his first of a double. The other touched in two minutes before time. Devon James tucked in NAU’s fifth goal five minutes to full time.
Despite Rosignol striking twice within two minutes, Clifford Campbell (80) and Shawn ‘Uncle’ Brutus (81) on target, they were not able to overcome NAU.
Cougars overcame a tough challenge from the fast improving Barzilla to advance. They opened the scoring in the 3rd minute through a Shawn Sauers goal.
But the rampaging Barzilla side not only equalised but scored two more goals to build a commanding lead. Leslie Amsterdam in the 12th, Glyston Ghingoree (24) and Cornel Taylor (32), combined to give their team a handsome advantage.
Winston Benjamin was able to cut the lead by one in the 33rd minute with no more goals materialising in the hectic first half.
In the second half, Cougars, who will be representing Berbice at the 19th Kashif and Shanghai tournament, had to pull on all their experience to shut out the upstarts, Brazilla.
With points being awarded for goals scored and other infringements, Cougars built up their tally by forcing their opponents into a number of errors while restraining themselves.
The infringements Brazilla committed cost them a total of 100 second half points and to compound their miserable second half performance, Cougars banged in two more goals via Benjamin who achieved a double with his second in the 52nd and the sealer from Lawal Ahmed on the stroke of full time for an exciting 4-3 win and 156 points to 105.
Barzilla and Rosignol will contest the third place game next Saturday from 19:00hrs.
