Min. of Education to distribute to Region 4 schools
By Franklin Wilson
Bakery giants Bakewell has once again raised the bar as a leading corporate citizen by purchasing six thousand tickets for students in region 4 to attend the Christmas Day quarter-final card of the 19th Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament, set for the National Stadium, Providence.
The Ministry of Education, who has been chosen to distribute the tickets to the schools in the region, yesterday accepted the donation from Managing Director of Bakewell Naeem Naseer at their Albert Street, office.
Naseer, while making the presentation to Assistant Chief Education Officer (Secondary) Melcita Bovell, said the tickets will be distributed to schools on the East Coast, Georgetown, East Bank and West Demerara.
He noted that they have a value of over six million dollars costing $1,000 each but he was able to negotiate a better deal with the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation.
“We want to promote the sport of football and because we want to do so we decided to ensure that the kids are able to attend the game. We’re very happy to give this to you for you to distribute to all these little children so that on Christmas day they have some place to go and something good to enjoy.”
Bakewell, is the only corporate entity in Guyana sponsoring two football clubs, Upper Demerara’s Bakewell Topp XX, who are five-time Kashif and Shanghai champions and eight-time finalist’s and East Demerara’s Bakewell Buxton Stars.
Bovell in saying thanks to Bakewell for their kind gesture, said, the Education Ministry welcomes partners whose initiative supports their education policy of sports and physical education which they are trying to roll out in all schools in Guyana.
“This gesture today is one that is surely going to enhance that promotion because what our students really need is good role models, like you’ve got a high class team playing on a very important day, they are actually having a Christmas present from Bakewell.”
Bovell also stated that getting young people involved in sports can change their life styles and social habits and bring about that positive cohesion that Guyana needs.
Sixteen teams including one overseas side from Trinidad and Tobago will contest the 19th Kashif and Shanghai football tournament set to kick off on Sunday December 14 at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, five-time champs (94/95, 96/97, 99/00, 00/01, 05/06) Bakewell Topp XX taking on fellow Linden side Rusal in the feature game, while the opening clash brings together City side Pele against Linden’s Milerock.
Milerock was the first team to win this prestigious competition back in 1990.
