Dec 01, 2008 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
I have worked the entire month of November 2008 and could not access my salary from the bank, because it is put on hold by the regional authorities of Region Six.
Salaries were available since November 25, and the other teachers from my school were able to access their salaries from the bank.
Last December, the education authorities threatened in a letter to withhold my salaries if I continue to attend the University of Guyana after school hours, “without release.”
Prior to that letter, two education officers of the Department of Education of Region Six echoed a similar thought on November 28, 2007.
I was forced, in December, to write this newspaper, because I could not comprehend why I need to be released to attend classes at 16:00hours and later. Others pursued studies at Critchlow Labour College around that same period last year and no authority was threatening to withhold their salaries if they did not apply for “release.”
Do I need to be released after I have finished working for the day? The Department of Education is responsible for me not attending CPCE.
I am fully qualified, but priorities were given to persons with lower grades. I have six subjects at the CXC General Proficiency Level, Mathematics and English Language inclusive. Persons with Grades 4 and 5 in Mathematics were given preference, and my Grade 2 in Mathematics was disregarded.
I then chose to pursue studies at the University of Guyana last year. I demand an explanation from the regional education authorities for inconveniencing me.
Further, I am not the only teacher in my school attending the University of Guyana after school, and I do not use the school’s time.
This is a total violation of my rights as a citizen of Guyana. I have worked, and therefore I must be paid.
The action of these education authorities contradicts the Labour Act of Guyana’s Constitution. Labour Act: Cap.1:01 22.(1) “Every citizen has the right to be rewarded according to the nature, quality and quantity of his or her work, to equal pay for equal work or work of equal value, and to just conditions of work.” I want the regional authorities to justify the withholding of my salary.
I have performed my duties for the month of November 2008, as in any other month, and I want my salary.
This attitude by the regional authorities of Region Six is unacceptable and, to my mind, very unprofessional. We need a better standard in the education system in Region Six.
