Fans are already looking ahead to what is expected to be a grand affair when the Kennard Memorial Turf Club stages their end of year horse race meeting scheduled at the club’s racetrack, Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne, Berbice on Boxing Day, Friday December 26.
The feature event among the C and lower Class over seven furlongs, will attract a first prize of $350,000 while the rider to come in second will win $175,000. The third place finisher will receive $87,500 while the fourth place will receive $43,000.
Turfites will also be entertained with several other spectacular races including the ‘L’ class (non-winners). This race will be run over a distance of 6 furlongs and the winner will receive $100,000. The second place will receive $50,000 while third and fourth place finishers will receive $25,000 and $13,000, respectively.
Intense competition is also anticipated in the ‘F’ and Lower Class category, also over 6 furlongs. The winner will ride away with $200,000 while the second place finisher will earn $100,000. Riders coming in 3rd and 4th will receive $50,000 and $25,000, respectively. ‘I’ and Lower Class will also compete over 6 furlongs and will earn $120,000 (1st place), $60,000 (2nd place) and $30, 000 and $15,000 (3rd and 4th places, respectively).
The 2 years old will also provide great entertainment in the open category. These horses are bred in Guyana as well as the West Indies and will compete over six furlongs.
Other races include the 3 years open, a distance of one mile. The first place will gallop away with $275,000 while the second jockey to cross the finish line will receive $137,000. The fourth and fifth places will cart off $68,000 and $34,000, respectively.
The K&L category competes over 6 furlongs and offers a first prize of $110,000 for the winner.
The final event for the day will witness horses in the ‘H’ and Lower Class competing over a distance of 7 furlongs. The winners’ purse in this category is $140,000.
Meanwhile, participants are advised that all races will be contested under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority. In the event that there are less than 5 horses any particular race, the organizers reserve the right to cancel or re-frame the event in question.
Horse owners are also advised that the writing in process for horses’ names will not be facilitated on race day. All entries close on Wednesday December 17 and late entries will not be accepted. Horse owners may have their animals registered through either Justice Kennard or Roopnarine Matadial. (Michael Benjamin)
