– Fatima maintain unbeaten streak in Veterans category
By Rawle Welch
Hikers’ guest player Trinidadian Arielle Cowie’s 38th minute strike proved to be the decisive factor in her team’s 1-0 win against GCC in the Ladies segment of this year’s Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival.
The result means that Hikers which also lost to Canada’s GOA have now improved their chances of making it to the final. GCC also lost to GOA, but their margin of defeat was greater than that of Hikers and will now have to win their remaining matches to guarantee a final berth.
The lone goal of the game came, when Cowie received a pass from the right conveyed by Avonda James and pierced an advancing Alysa Xavier through her legs.
Earlier, GCC were unfortunate not to take the lead when Sonia Jardine’s goal was disallowed by umpire Dereck Lovell.
In results of other matches played yesterday, defending Veterans champions Fatima of Trinidad and Tobago continued their prolific goal scoring with an 8-2 drubbing of counterparts Malvern. On target for the winners were David Nieves (9, 23, 27, 38, 39), who netted five goals, while there was one apiece for Colin Young (14) and Rolph Young (26); Old Old Fort, also strengthened their chances of going forward with a hard fought 3-2 victory over a determined Carib Degenerates. Former nationals Gavin Hope (10, 22) and US-based Jeremy Roberts (8) were the marksmen, while Tristan Gomes (11) and Dane McCalman (13) kept the contest interesting.
In the final match of the morning session, Hikers Men hammered Western Dragons 13-4 thanks to hat-tricks from Jerazeno Bell (5, 25, 40) and Shane Samuels (12, 30, 39).
Contributions also came from promising junior player Shaquille Assanah (6, 7), Alex Gouveia (16, 19), Devin Munroe (22, 41) and Timothy McIntosh (35).
Responding for Dragons were Renville Linsdale (2), Herris Simon (10), Jermaine Murray (24) and Leroy Carroll (33).
Meanwhile, in Friday evening results: Kwandewane Browne-led Notre Dame eased to a 7-3 win over Dragons with the former leading the way with another virtuoso performance, slamming in four goals (8, 19, 20, 26). He was supported by a brace from Selwyn King (1, 17) and J. Roberts (11). For the Dragons, J. Murray (2, 3) netted a double and H. Simon (20), added the other.
Fatima beat GCC 6-3 in a Veterans encounter with C. Young (6, 39, 40), R. Young (10), Derek Lee (12) and Neil Pichery (24), the goal-scorers, while Alan Fernandes (24, 26) and David Fernandes (38) responded for GCC.
Hikers Ladies then went down to GOA 1-2 with Kate Gillis (14) and Angela Lancaster (31) the players to enter the score-sheet, while Cora Towler (40) netted for the losers.
Malvern then beat Paradise 7-3. Joshua DeFour (7, 26, 29, 33, 36) was on fire and he received admirable support from Colin Byron (13) and Albert Marcano (16). No names of scorers were available for Paradise.
The competition was expected to continue last evening where most of the semi-finalists would have been confirmed.
