Police believe that the same gunmen who were slain in a shootout yesterday at the Cromarty Foreshore, Corentyne had not only hijacked a pin seine boat on Thursday at Number 19 Village, Corentyne, but had also stolen the fishing vessel Mark Counter 2 at Mahaica/Mahaicony.
This vessel has accommodation for a 10-member crew.
According to a police statement, the vessels were stolen at around 07:00 hrs on Wednesday.
The statement said that an examination of the Mark Counter 2 revealed that 60 gallons of fuel were stolen from the vessel.
An engine, clothing and boots were found in the boat. These have been lodged at the Mahaicony Police Station. The statement added that the gunmen hijacked the pin seine boat on Thursday.
However, the boat ran out of fuel and the gunmen were forced to dock at Cromarty foreshore, where they left the crew after tying them up.
However, one crew member escaped and alerted ranks at the Whim Police Station, who responded immediately.
There was an exchange of gunfire with police and ‘pirates’, during which the three ‘pirates’ and Constable Oslen Glasgow of Whim Police Station were killed, and one of the crew members was wounded.
