Rosignol United and Barzilla are through to the semi-finals of the Fruta Skills knock-out football tournament organized by the Berbice Football Association following wins over Corriverton Links and Western Blazers, respectively.
Playing the feature match on Saturday night, Corriverton Links in only their second match at this level gave Rosignol United and the other clubs present lots to think about, showing that they will be a tough force to reckon with coming from behind to level the fulltime score 3-3.
Links jumped into the lead in the 5th minute with a well placed Sherwin Murray shot. Rosignol responded with a double from Delroy Fraser in the 9th and 36th minutes.
Joylon Bishop then sent Rosignol farther ahead with a goal in the 37th for a comfortable 3 – 1 advantage or so it seemed.
But in the second half Corriverton Links really linked as a unit with an effective display of basic ball weaving and were aptly rewarded with goals in the 57th and 79th minutes off the boots of substitutes Shane Scipio and Oliver Jaundoo.
Their inexperience however would have worked against them and after being tied at 86 points each at one stage they conceded 97 points overall to Rosignol’s 68, losing out in throws and corners to go down by 113 to 142.
In the opening encounter, Barzilla FC, who had already booked their semi-final spot when Paradise Invaders opted out of the tournament, whipped Western Blazers 3-0.
Glyson Ghingoree (20 & 40) touched in a double, Cornel Taylor (65) accounted for the other.
The battle for the only two spots in the final is set for Sunday.
Rosignol United face New Amsterdam United with Brazilla opposing Cougars in opening play at 19:00hrs. The championship match will be played on Saturday December 6.
