After more than a day of questioning, police have released the wife of executed carpenter
Vikesh Budhram, while his two brothers remain in custody.
The trio was arrested on Tuesday and underwent intense interrogation as detectives try to piece together what appears to be a very baffling case.
The investigation focused on Budhram’s reputed wife Basmattie Rambharose and his two brothers after detectives were given conflicting reports of various aspects of the incident.
For one, there was no sign of forced entry to the building and except for Rambharose, none of the other occupants claimed to have seen any of the alleged killers.
Further suspicion was added when an autopsy performed on Budhram’s body indicated that he had been shot at point blank range since there was gunpowder residue on his neck.
Investigators are also looking at the fact that relatives had indicated that Budhram had no known problem with anyone and yet they were told that the alleged killers went directly to his room and shot him.
However, a source close to the investigation told this newspaper that during the intense interrogation, none of the detained suspects gave any evidence that would incriminate them.
Vikesh Budhram, 25, of 642 17th Street, Foulis, received a single gunshot wound to the neck while sleeping with his wife, Basmattie Rambharose, and one-year-old daughter, Rihanna.
Detectives said that Budhram’s death bore the hallmarks of an execution, since the killers did not demand anything from the family, but fled immediately after the suspected hit, which occurred at about 23:00 hours on Saturday.
The source could not say when the dead man’s two brothers would be released but assured that the investigations will be intensified.
The police in a press release had stated that so far there is no evidence that an AK-47 rifle was used during the incident.
According to the police, while it has been confirmed that a 7.62 x 39 calibre spent shell and a warhead were recovered at the scene, this calibre of ammunition can be used in various other types of firearms, in addition to the AK-47 rifle.
The police added that no one saw what type of firearms the perpetrators were carrying, while ballistics tests are still being conducted on the warhead.
The police stated that since the publication of an article stating that an AK-47 was the weapon used in the killing, members of the public have contacted the Police Force expressing concern and alarm.
