Six prisoners to be charged
Charges are likely to be instituted against some six inmates of the New Amsterdam Prison in connection with last Saturday’s attempted jailbreak.
Contrary to earlier reports that only implicated two, six inmates were found to have attempted to break out.
A source close to the investigations revealed that the file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice.
The source said that based on feedback from the DPP office, it is likely some ‘serious charges’ are likely for the six men. This newspaper has also been informed that one of the six men involved is currently serving a three-year sentence for escaping from lawful custody while being detained for a criminal offense.
Already a woman has been remanded on a charge linked to the attempted jailbreak.
Rookmin Greene, called ‘Betty’, appeared before Magistrate Geeta Chandan at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court on Friday, charged with assisting persons in their attempt to escape from lawful custody.
She pleaded not guilty but was nevertheless remanded to prison until tomorrow.
There are reports, too, that other charges are likely for Greene since she is the person who reportedly provided the inmates with an axe saw, which was reportedly used during their escape bid.
