Guyana produced a late flourish against minnows Canada, but it came a little too late as they failed to qualify for the semi-finals despite their 7-wicket win yesterday, at the National Stadium, Providence.
The Guyanese set a victory target of 165 after restricting the Canadians to 164-4 off the allotted 50 overs, closed on 168-3 in 36.2 overs with Steven Jacobs hitting an unbeaten 54.
His innings spanned 67 balls and contained 4 boundaries to help him earn the Man-of-the-Match award, while other solid contributions came from Rajendra Chandrika 39, Christopher Barnwell’s quick-fire 33 off 39 balls laced with 5 fours and Gajanand Singh 17 not out.
Earlier, Guyana won the toss and sent the opposition into take first strike and they posted a meager 164-4 with Guyana-born Sunil Dhaniram stoking a top-score of 53 not out, while Sandeep Jyoti (37) and Khuram Chowan (32 not out) were the other principal contributors as the Canadians struggled to post a bigger total.
Brandon Bess, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Veerasammy Permaul and Royston Crandon each took a wicket apiece.
Is this oil a blessing or a curse?
