The Week of National Testing for HIV began yesterday with scores of Guyanese taking the test.
Under the theme “Take action, take the test,” the Ministry of Health and the National AIDS Programme Secretariat organised the Week of Testing, which ends on November 21, with the aim of getting 10, 000 persons tested.
More than 200 testing sites have been set up in all ten administrative regions of Guyana.
Programme Manager of the National AIDS Programme Secretariat, Dr. Shanti Singh, is optimistic that the targeted number of persons will be met or possibly surpassed.
She noted that while a number of persons may be unaware of their status, the Secretariat, through its various mass media messages, has endeavoured to show that knowing your HIV status is just as normal as getting a test for another disease.
“People have come to realise that getting an HIV test is all part of a healthy lifestyle,” she said.
“When the ministry began a National Day of Testing in 2006, there was a very modest target of close to 1200 persons. Now, just three years later, we are seeking to get 10,000 persons tested, and we are confident that we will achieve this target,” she said.
Outside of the National Week of Testing, between November 13 and November15, more than 600 persons were tested for HIV.
