Ronuel Greenidge took the lead after the seventh round of the National Chess Championships over the weekend, while Taffin Khan maintains his unbeaten streak in the junior department.
In Saturday’s action at the Ocean Spray International Hotel, Greenidge got the better of Errol Tiwari. Tiwari had control of the game until Greenidge forced him to trade off queens. Greenidge then capitalized on a pass pawn, which made Tiwari to blunder a bishop before resigning.
Omar Shariff registered his first win of the tournament against Dennis Dillon, while David Khan defeated Frankie Farley. Loris Nathoo and National Champion Kriskal Persaud played to a draw.
In round five David Khan played like a grandmaster to destroyed Persaud in twenty moves, while Tiwari defeated Shariff. Nathoo and Greenidge, and Farley and Dillon played to a draw.
In the junior category Taffin Khan continued his unbeaten streak as he brushed aside Kana Khan and Khalid Gajraj on Saturday.
It was father and son heading into Sunday with the lead when played resumed. The day belonged to the talented Greenidge, who registered two wins to take the lead in the senior category.
He first defeated Khan in the morning session and Dillon in the afternoon. Khan rebound to defeat Tiwari. Farley held Persaud to a draw, while Shariff and Nathoo also settle for a draw.
The points standing after the first half of the tournament; Ronuel Greenidge and David Khan five points, Loris Nathoo and Errol Tiwari four and a half, Kriskal Persaud four, Omar Shariff two and a half, Frankie Farley one and a half and Dennis Dillon on one point. Taffin Khan maintains a firm grip on the junior category, defeating Rashad Hussain and Sham Khan.
The points standing for juniors are; Taffin Khan seven, Cecil Cox five, Rashad Hussain four, Saeed Ali and Khalid Gajraj three and Kana Khan, Sham Khan and Devendra Singh all on two points.
The tournament continues this Saturday at the Ocean Spray International Hotel and Sunday at the King’s Plaza Hotel.
