Residents of Number 51 Village are once again without potable water.
People’s National Congress Reform Region Six Councillor and resident of Number Fifty-One Village, Winston Samuels, indicated that this situation has been going on for the past two weeks. According to him, the matter was reported to the Guyana Water Inc. both in Berbice and Georgetown at least six times.
Many persons in the area are forced to secure a supply of potable water from Number 47, Number 55 or Number 56 Villages.
“This is not a new problem for us. Having heard the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Karan Singh, saying that Number Fifty-Three as well as Number Sixty-Three wells would be reactivated, residents felt relieved that they would no longer have the problem of accessing potable water.
“Instead, what we recognized has happened, Number Sixty-Three has been reactivated and nothing for Number Fifty-Three Village up to now.”
The Regional Councillor opined that the failure to reactivate the well at Number Fifty-Three Village is a political move.
“Politics is the deciding factor where the distribution of services is concerned. There are plans, however, if we don’t see any serious attempt to remedy this situation; unlike what has happened in the past, we would protest.”
Another resident, Albert Morgan, explained that there was a decrease in the supply of potable water about a month ago, but the supply ceased altogether about a fortnight ago. “I called GWI and informed them of the situation here on the first street east of the public road and on the public road, both the eastern and western sides. The supervisor promised to visit the area.”
According to Mr. Morgan, the official did as promised, and inspected several sections of the community, but nothing has changed.
The plight of the Number Fifty-One residents existed since 1994, and from then these persons have been calling for a well at Number Fifty-Three Village, which they believe could ease their inconvenience.
Number Fifty-One Village is sited between two wells; the one at Number Fifty-Seven serves consumers between Number Sixty-One and Number Fifty-One Villages. The other one at Number Forty-Seven Village provides a supply for those between Number Forty-Four Village/Good Hope and Number Fifty Village.
The residents complained that even with the water treatment plant at Number Fifty-Six Village, their situation remains the same.
On Thursday and Friday last, efforts to secure a comment from the Guyana Water Inc. proved futile.
