The Moblissa community is on the starting point to recovery, as five wells have been established in the area under the Moblissa Water Users Association, via the Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP).
There was the construction of four new wells, while an existing one was refurbished by LEAP, all at a cost of $40 million.
These wells will be powered by solar pumps, since the area does not have access to electricity.
At the commissioning ceremony of the wells, yesterday at the Moblissa community on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, it was explained that the overall objective of the program is to improve the quality of life for the residents in the community, whose population is approximately 200, including 25 dairy families.
It was noted that these wells will now provide the opportunity for farmers to enhance their farming activities, as they now have easy access to water.
The water system will also be used for domestic consumption. Each system consists of a water well, an above-ground storage reservoir, solar driven pumps, and discharge spigots.
The water system is owned and managed by the Moblissa Water Users Association, and users’ fees will be levied in order to support the operation and maintenance of the system.
Present at the commissioning ceremony of the water system were Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud.
Under the LEAP initiative, the community will also benefit from a demonstration farm, which is expected to be established in the area at a cost of some $40 million.
It was explained that the demonstration farm will be of great significance to the people of Moblissa, as it would expose them to good agricultural practices.
LEAP will also be conducting research to find out whether or not a wind farm can be set up in the community.
To date, the primary objective of LEAP has been to improve the prospects of the Moblissa community, including conducting a rapid food security agricultural production and food consumption assessment in Region 10, in which the farms in Moblissa were surveyed and studied, along with preparing a report on a baseline study, which offered an analysis of the community and its production possibilities and land clearing activities, among others.
