President Bharrat Jagdeo will be meeting with stakeholders tomorrow to find a way forward in curbing the escalating incidents of violence against women. The meeting is scheduled for the Office of the President, and will discuss and arrive at conclusions on specific ways the Government commitment can be translated into actual activities and programmes.
Many of those that the President will be hosting are the stakeholders who were involved in the ‘Stamp It Out’ campaign.
During his weekly press briefing, on Friday, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, told the media that Cabinet undertook to support efforts, both ongoing and future, by mass organisations seeking to implement activities against sexual and other violence against women.
On that basis, he said, Cabinet decided to heighten the mobilisation of popular sentiment against this scourge by enlisting national stakeholders.
Guyana’s Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, over the past year, engaged in discussions with a number of organisations and with members of the public to solicit their opinions and suggestions with a view to drafting the legislation.
The Ministry of Human Services launched the ‘Stamp It Out’ consultation paper last September with the aim of reforming the law on sexual violence to strengthen protection, and to improve support and services for victims, whilst at the same time upholding the right of the defendant to a fair trial.
Some of the proposed changes are the abolition of preliminary inquiries, the introduction of integrated service hospitals, and the establishment of a Sex Offences Court.
