FFTP launches G$116M housing project

Residents in and around the riverain areas in Essequibo will benefit from a new housing project geared at improving living conditions of persons squatting along the Essequibo Coast and riverain areas.
Commencing last Monday, Food for the Poor began its ‘Little Red Village’ housing project which will see some 100 ‘red roof’ houses being built at the ‘Onderneeming’ Sandpit location in Region Two, to assist squatters on the Essequibo Coast and other outlying areas. This project has been evaluated to cost $116 million.

The first phase of the project will see 52 houses being built along with sanitation blocks, a community centre and a nursery school.
The community centre will provide skills training in computer classes, sewing, garment construction and other subject areas.
To date, 12 houses are already completed since the project was initiated on Monday last. Phase one of this venture is expected to be completed in December while the second phase is to be concluded by January next year.
Each house will have yard space for farming or kitchen gardening.
Phase two of the project will cater for the construction of the remaining 48 houses and the construction of a complex where marketing and other vital functions can be executed.
Applicants are expected to pay some $67,000 for the housing plots (land) and can do so in two installments, an arrangement made possible by Government, according to FFTP sources.
The houses will be handed over to the respective owners in January.
