Six Guyanese players were chosen in a provisional
squad called up by the West Indies Rugby Union (WIRU) to prepare for the upcoming International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series which is scheduled to take place in Hong Kong from March 27-29, 2009.
The Rugby West Indies Selection Committee which comprises Joe Whipple (Barbados), who is both Chairman & Head Coach, John Cassidy (Bermuda), Noel Adonis (Guyana), Conroy O’Mally (Jamaica) and David Mays (University of T&T) met recently and short listed the following players for possible selection on the final squad and they are: Tom Healy and Jack Ellision of Bermuda; Devon Woodside, Andrew Bain, Jeremico Cooper and Duran Beadle of the Bahamas; Richard Staglon, Rupert Giles, Claudius Butts, Albert LaRose, Theodore Henry and Kevin McKenzie of Guyana; Jason Clarke, Andre Carbera, Wayne Kelly, Kidane Silverthorne, Bevon Armitage and Graeme Alkins of Trinidad and Tobago; Nicholas Pusey, Donald Walters, Everton Walters of Jamaica; Joshua Clarke, Michael Wilson of the Cayman Islands and Hollis Green of St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
A select West Indies team will be chosen to participate in the Carib Beer Invitational Sevens Tournament in Trinidad and Tobago on December 6-7, while it was also mentioned that a team will be chosen to represent the West Indies in the Punta del Este International Sevens Tournament in Uruguay on January 3-4, 2009.
Following participation in those two tournaments, a 12-man squad will be named for the IRB event in Hong Kong.
